ThriveAgric case C: Growing the entrepreneurial business

By Rupert Merson

2024

The case series surveys the formation and early development of ThriveAgric, a Nigerian-based startup facilitating the financing and effectiveness of smallholder farmers.

The A case discusses the “need” – i.e. the poverty of smallholder farmers in Nigeria caused by structural inefficiencies in the industry, lack of education and training, weak infrastructure and low investment; the motivation of the founders; and the formation of ThriveAgric and its early development

  1. Understand how the problems facing agriculture in developing countries can create opportunities for entrepreneurs
  2. Identify the differences between necessity entrepreneurship and growth entrepreneurship
  3. Understand how entrepreneurs in developing-world contexts can secure sustainable growth
  4. Understand turnaround vs start-up as different types of entrepreneurial activity (role of founders vs the role of turnaround professionals) and the implications of moving from crowdfunding to institutional finance
  5. Explore growth options; in particular expansion through new services vs through new markets.
